Cohasset Democratic Town Committee

Meeting minutes, April 3, 2010

 

Members present:  Theresa Polhemus, Judith Chute, Agnes McCann, Ed Lapin, Tom Callahan, Peter Pescatore, Helene Leib, Gail Collins, Kevin McCarthy

 

Facebook:  Ed lapin reported that the Committee’s Facebook page was building slowly and was getting approximately 10 visits per week.

So far 6 people have become “friends.

 

Scholarship:  Betsy Connolly reported through Kevin that the scholarship process was on track with scholarship to be presented the first week in June.

 

Yard Sale:  Agnes McCann spoke for the yard sale committee.  The ninth annual scholarship yard sale will be held May 15th at Donna McGee’s home at 23 Hill St.   Items for the sale can be dropped off one to two weeks before the sale up to Thursday the 13th of May.  Volunteers will be needed for hanging signs, collecting items, pricing and set-up, sale day and clean-up.

 

Roosevelt Dinner:  Kevin McCarthy will be an invited guest at the Eleanor Roosevelt Dinner at the Fairmont Copley Park Plaza, April 8th.  Committee member, Theresa Polhemus will attend also through ticket funds approved by the Committee which sends one person per year to this important function.

 

Coming Events:  On April 11 there will be a brunch at the Weymouth Elks Hall on rte 53 (1197 Washington St.) Weymouth.  The keynote speaker will be Congressman William Delahunt.  Candidates for the 2010 election are expected to attend.

 On April 23 there will be a “trivia night” at the Marshfield VFW on Rte 3a in Marshfield.

 

Open Discussion:  The subject of the Town Committee supporting local candidates for town elections was discussed with varying opinions expressed by the Committee members with some feeling that the committee should stay with the current practice of supporting candidates individually, but not as a Committee.  It is felt by some that local elections should avoid partisanship.  Others felt that local elections were a good opportunity to politically support Democratic candidates for local elections.  It was decided informally to continue the process of discussion regarding this issue of the Committee’s supporting local candidates.

The possibility of a forum for local candidates was discussed.  

 

Movie night:  The next “movie night” will be Friday, April 16 at 7:00 P.M. in the Meeting Room of the Paul Pratt Library.  The most recent, hard-hitting and sometimes hilarious, Michael Moore film, “Capitalism: A Love Story” will be shown.

 

Candidates for Office:  Senator Robert O’Leary spoke to the Committee on his candidacy for Bill Delahunt’s Congressional seat in November. Further information on Sen. O’Leary can be found at www.Robert.O’Leary@state.Ma.US  

A local candidate, Cohasset’s Paul Kearney, spoke about his reasons for running for State Senate.  He will be running against incumbent, Senator Hedlund.  For further information on Paul Kearney go to www.kearney4senate.com
