Meeting Minutes

May 1, 2012

 

Members Present:  Pat Laugelle, Gail Collins, Kevin McCarthy, Ed Lappen,

Judith Chute, Theresa Polhemus, Jean Dippold, Chartis Tebbets, Ned Tebbets, Donna McGee, Agnes McCann; Marylou Clark

 

Candidates for state office:  Michael Morrissey spoke to the Committee about his campaign for District Attorney of the Tenth District.  Currently Morrissey is a State Senator and has represented the Norfolk/Plymouth District for 18 years after 16 years in the House.  Mr. Morrissey said he has 25 years experience as a trial lawyer and that he manages a 50 person Law firm.  For more information go to www.votemorrissey.com

 

Tom McDonough spoke on behalf of Steve Murphy, Boston City Counselor at Large, who is running for State Treasurer.  For more information go to murphyfortreasurer.com

 

Website and Facebook:  Ed Lappen reported that there are so far 55 fans on the Committee’s Facebook page.  Sally Sisson and Ed have been putting pertinent/current information on the Committee’s page.  Ed and Sally are willing to help folks who wish to become a fan on the Committee’s Facebook page.

 

Social Network forum:  Kevin is planning a forum in the near future on social networking using the expertise of a local resident.  This may be available to both the Democratic Town Committee and the So Shore Democratic Caucus.  The subject would be the “use of social media networking on politics today-how it works and why it’s useful.”

 

Yard Sale:  Contributions of useful items in good repair (excluding clothing) are needed for the 9th annual scholarship yard sale on May 15th at 23 Hill St. Cohasset, the home of Donna McGee. Rain date will be May 16th.   Additional volunteers are needed to:

Hang signs on Wed.  (Gail and Judith and Chartis and Ned will organize)

Organize and price on Friday (Chartis and Judith will help)

Begin clean up at 11:30 on Saturday (Peter Pescatore will help)

Scholarship:  Kevin will make the scholarship presentation to the chosen  recipient on Class Night, June 3 at Cohasset High School.

 

Fall Fund Raiser/Unity Party:  Plans were discussed for the third annual Cohasset Democrat’s fund raiser and unity party, which will be held on Sept. 11th.  Ed Lappen and Helene Leib have graciously offered to host the party again this year.  Committee planners are Chair, Theresa Polhemus;  

Vice Chair, Sally Sisson; Judith Chute and Jean Dippold.

Silent auction committee members are: Donna McGee, Chair; Agnes McCann, Vice Chair; and Gail Collins

 

Movie Night:  Michael Moore’s movie, Capitalism: A Love Story was shown in April and was well attended by an appreciative audience.  The next movie night will feature the popular Frank Capra movie, “State of the Union,” The 1948 film stars Spencer Tracey and Catherine Hepburn.

The next movie night is May21 at 7P in the meeting room of the library.

 

Town -wide water problem: Ed Lappen spoke of the Cohasset water department’s current and impending  financial difficulties.  Ed, speaking as a concerned citizen and as a member of the water crisis committee, reported that the water department is experiencing a serious budget shortfall.  The possibility of an informational meeting for interested citizens of Cohasset  was explored.  

 

Wind turbine:  Peter Pescatore brought to the Committee’s attention that a wind turbine is being proposed by the Alternate Energy Committee to be installed at the transfer station. 

 

The next Cohasset Democratic Town committee meeting will be June 12 at a.m. at the Paul Pratt Library in the meeting room.
